Algunas recomendaciones para convertirse en PMP.

Existen cientos y cientos de guías, libros, cursos, páginas web y recomendaciones acerca de cómo prepararse “correctamente” para aprobar el examen de certificación PMP del Project Management Institute. Evidentemente, entre todo este montón de recursos hay productos de buena calidad y otros no tanto… Quiero aprovechar esta entrada de mi blog para ofrecer mis recomendaciones acerca de cómo estudiar de forma correcta, lo que lleva implícito el aprobar, la certificación PMP. Recuerda que son “mis” recomendaciones y que a medida que vayas progresando en el estudio eres tú el que debe encontrar tus herramientas y métodos que mejor te vayan.

● PMP (Project Management Professional) es una certificación emitida por la entidad privada PMI (Project Management Institute) ; ni mas ni menos.

Requisitos.
● Los requisitos necesarios para poder presentarse al examen PMP son 2:
- 3 años de experiencia previa en gestión de proyectos si eres titulado universitario y 5 años si has completado los estudios de la ESO.
- 35 horas de cualquier tipo de formación en gestión de proyectos.

IMPORTANTE: No confundas los PDU con las horas. Los PDU (Professional Development Units) son necesarios para mantener tu credencial PMP una vez obtenida; nunca para obtenerla. Las PDU sólo se pueden obtener a través de REPs (Registered Education Providers); organismos aprobados por el PMI. Las horas se pueden obtener de cualquier forma.

● No es necesario presentar la documentación oficial de estos requisitos, pero tenla a tu disposición por si el PMI te decide auditar antes de dar su visto bueno para que te examines.

● Para aprobar el examen PMP es “necesario y suficiente” estudiar el PMBOK Guide del PMI (pero ojo).

Qué y cómo estudiar.
● Antes de comenzar a estudiar léete toda la documentación necesaria del PMI.

● Estudiar el PMBOK Guide no es “aprenderlo de memoria”. Es necesario comprenderlo y “aprehenderlo”. Aprender cosas de memoria, en ciertos casos, es necesario, especialmente para aprobar el examen.

● Como su nombre indica, se trata de una “guía” de los fundamentos de la gestión de proyectos. Esto quiere decir que para comprenderla y aprehenderla es necesario, en muchos casos, profundizar un poquito en algunos conceptos.

● El PMBOK Guide es un documento muy conciso en los conceptos y denso; pero muy coherente y consistente. Si se estudia de forma correcta, toda esta coherencia se va haciendo evidente con el tiempo. Si no consigues alcanzar este punto puedes aprobar el examen pero en un par de meses todo lo estudiado no te valdrá de nada. Tú eliges.

● Mi estimación para alcanzar este nivel es de 6 meses en dedicación parcial (1 ó 2 horas diarias) y 4 meses en dedicación total (4 horas diarias). Yo recomiendo la dedicación parcial.

● No te des “atracones”. Estudia una parte e intenta comprenderla y asimilarla.

● No utilices demasiadas herramientas de estudio. Las necesarias:
- PMBOK Guide (en el idioma en que vayas a hacer el examen).
- Un libro genérico de gestión de proyectos.
- Un manual de preguntas y respuestas (mínimo 200; practica y practica)

● Aunque no estés de acuerdo con algún concepto o definición recuerda que lo que cuenta es lo que dice el PMBOK Guide y no lo que opines tú. Esto se hace especialmente importante en lo tocante al Código Ético del PMI (algo chocante para un no estadounidense).

● No te fíes de los baremos para aprobar el examen. De entrada pueden parecer bajos pero no lo son tanto. Estudia como si quisieses acertar todas las preguntas.

● Aun cuando el PMBOK Guide es muy claro y conciso las preguntas del examen son más ambiguas de lo que uno pueda esperar (de ahí el comprenderlo); pero no tienen “trampa”.

(Podcast, Cornelius Fichtner, 35 horas)
